Don’t miss the 40th anniversary of the YMCA’S BB&T Corporate Cup

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte’s BB&T Corporate Cup 5k, Half Marathon and Half Marathon Relay. The Corporate Cup, the most historic race in Charlotte, is on Saturday, March 9.

Starting and finishing in Uptown Charlotte at MLK Boulevard and Tryon Street, over 3,000 participants will race to the finish line competing in the 5K, Half Marathon and Relay distances.

An ideal race for all skill levels, runners and walkers will begin the Half Marathon and Relay portion of the race at 7:40 a.m., and the 5K at 8:15 a.m. Having become tradition with the Corporate Cup, all participants will receive a race-day shirt, and finishers of each distance will take home a finisher medal to display in their collection or wear during the post-race celebration with food, music and more in Uptown.

“The Corporate Cup is such a fun race to start the year with,” Corporate Cup race director Sarah Burnell said. “The camaraderie of being surrounded by other runners as we race through Uptown Charlotte is amazing. It is truly a race where you are able to use the positive energy to push you across the finish line.”

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the race is not the only milestone in 2019. This year marks the 10th Annual Team Challenge. To win the coveted Corporate Cup championship and a year of priceless bragging rights, both corporate and community teams with a minimum of 10 participants earn points in friendly competition with each other.

Teams earn points for individual participation, volunteerism, team spirit on social media and fundraising. Previous winners of the Corporate Cup include RSM, Duke Energy, Clariant and MetsoPower.

More than just a race, the Corporate Cup leads the way in supporting the YMCA’s community outreach, with proceeds of the race going to programs like Y Readers, Level Up and Safety Around Water — programs that increase literacy in youth, provide teens a productive outlet for growth and teach all kids basic swimming techniques to prevent childhood drownings.

“Having the ability to support critical youth programming is our greatest driving force with this race,” Burnell said. “It’s a fun race with a great route through Uptown Charlotte, and the bonus is that runners will be helping our community along the way.
