When Melinda Harper and Scott Fouts found themselves dining next to each other at uptown Charlotte’s 5Church, the attraction was immediate. By the time they finished their respective meals with friends, they were all sharing a table. Melinda was hopeful and recalls Scott ending the night by asking, “How do I find you again?”

A year later, the couple set off for a Parisian vacation. “I had wondered if he would propose, but was fairly certain he would not,” Melinda says. Perhaps it was her attention to the details of the trip that allowed Scott time to make his own plans for a proposal on Pont de Arts (also known as the “Love Lock Bridge”) at sunset. As Melinda tossed her love lock key into the Seine, she turned to find Scott on one knee with the sun setting behind Notre Dame and passersby cheering and photographing their happy moment.

After their storybook engagement, Melinda and Scott were eager to begin planning their wedding at the Mint Museum Uptown with the help of Ashley Cash of The Graceful Host.

The bride wanted it to be “a celebration of love with our friends and family with non-traditional elements,” she says. One of those elements: Scott walking to meet Melinda at the end of the aisle so they could walk together to the altar where the groom’s brother presided.

The couple was married in the Mint Museum Uptown’s Robert Haywood Morrison Atrium.

The reception followed in the Matty and Marc Silverman Grand Ballroom and Trustees Terrace.  The guests—carefully curated to include only those who’ve had an influence on their lives—entered a space filled with vibrant jewel tone decor, offset by elegant neutral linens. The terrace, lit with purple and pink, was the perfect place for guests to take in the Charlotte skyline while celebrating the newlyweds.

Sol Fusion performed Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” for the couple’s first dance as husband and wife, and kept the dance floor full throughout the reception. Ben Keys of Wed on Canvas brought a special element to the evening as he painted the reception live, providing entertainment for all and a stunning keepsake for Melinda and Scott.

As the party drew to a close, guests were sent off with maple-glazed donuts sprinkled with candied bacon. In lieu of wedding gifts, Melinda and Scott wished to share their happiness and good fortune with a local charity. Guests were asked to consider celebrating the marriage with a donation to Mental Health America for Central Carolinas.

The couple wrapped up their wedding celebrations with a two-week honeymoon to Italy. They reside in Charlotte, where Melinda practices as a clinical psychologist with Charlotte Psychotherapy & Consultation Group and Scott is a risk engineer with Hartford Insurance Group.
