Spring and jazz make April one of the best months to live in the Queen City! Flowers are blooming, flip-flops are front and center, it’s Jazz Appreciation Month and the 11th season of The Jazz Room @ Stage Door Theatre kicks off with one doozy of an opener when Eileina Dennis sings Sarah Vaughan with strings.
This special edition performance is April 27 and 28 (6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. each night) at the Blumenthal Stage Door Theater on North College Street and will put you in the mood for sunshine and good times. If last week’s Charlotte Jazz Festival had you just getting started, here’s the perfect way to “laissez les bon temps rouler.“
Enjoy an evening out with ‘Sassy’
Trade in Netflix, the couch and your favorite blanket for a beautiful (and affordable) night out in Uptown Charlotte at The Jazz Room.
Tickets start at $16 each so why not leave your heavy coat and home and settle into the ambiance-filled Jazz Room.
As the lights come down you will be treated to the impeccable voice of Eileina Dennis paying tribute to New Jersey native and songstress Sarah Vaughan. Vaughan was nicknamed “Sassy” for her onstage style and later dubbed “The Divine One” after striking out on her own. She’s the voice behind “Whatever Lola Wants”, “Misty” and “Broken-Hearted Melody.”
All this talent and a string quartet in addition to the jazz quartet. That’s a lot of quartet for the money. After a few tunes, you’ll be feeling sassy too.
Tap your (painted) toes and raise your glass
This music will give you reason to tap your spring-ready toes and raise your glass. Vocalist Eileina Dennis was raised in Birmingham, England and grew up singing Gospel. She had a notable career as an R&B and pop singer performer before falling in love with jazz. Dennis points to Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald as all having influenced her career.
“I’m not in the business of emulating or trying to be ‘Sassy’,” she says. “All I can do is perform well and try to reach the bar of excellence which has been set.”
And with the full service bar located right inside the intimate jazz room you can raise your glass as many times as you’d like to this English talent who now makes her home in New Orleans.
Take a much needed break
Need to get a way but those pesky things like jobs and bills keep you close to home? The Jazz Room in Charlotte is one of Uptown’s best kept secrets and a great escape from the hustle and bustle of well… everything.
The intimate feel, hot jazz and classy ambiance beckons you to unplug, relax and get lost in the cool and magical performance on stage. Pair these much needed hours of art, music and focus with dinner or dessert and you will (almost) be ready to face the world again.
