When the Summer Pops series with the Charlotte Symphony rolls around, it is a sure sign warmer weather and longer days are finally here. Since 1983 (yes, for 35 years!) they’ve transformed summer nights into something special with fabulous music and memorable performances.

This summer season is no different — and they have a few tricks up their finely tuned sleeves, including a well traveled DeLorean, Huey Lewis and the News beats and a temperamental flux capacitor. On June 22, the Pops will take on one of the ‘80s most-loved movies, Back to the Future, while professional musicians perform for a film-in-concert.

What is a film-in-concert?

A film-in-concert is what it sounds like. A movie plays on a large screen and the live orchestra takes care of the music. Believe me this is no easy feat! Resident Conductor Christopher James Lees uses a digital metronome, or “click-track,” which he places in his ear and must follow without error for everything to look just right. Come be amazed!

Why Back to the Future?

Back to the Future is going to be a favorite for the whole family — and we mean everyone! If you are into the 1950s music, clothing and slang, this movie has it covered. The nostalgic 1980s make an appearance with skateboards, old-school tunes and a life preserver that serves as a jacket. And for all you futuristic folks, there’s a flying car. Plus, you’ll see memorable characters and learn great one-liners you can use all year. (Great Scott!)

But is this event held outside in this sweltering heat?

We know: you love Summer Pops, but don’t like the heat, bugs and other warm-weather challenges that come with an outdoor performance. Thankfully, this film-in-concert will be held inside at the stunning Belk Theater with the sweet relief of air conditioning and cushy seats! Oh, and did we mention tickets start at just $19?

Will there be a real-life DeLorean there?

The only way to get Back to the Future is by riding in the DeLorean that transports Marty and friends across time. At this event, you too can get in the driver’s seat of the DeLorean (for a donation to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research). The DeLorean will be on site at the theater, ready to be posed with for your Instagram post.

Built by husband and wife team Oliver and Terry Holler, this fab ride has toured 28 countries and all 50 states as an ambassador for the official website BacktotheFuture.com. It has also appeared in international ad campaigns and is used to raise funds and awareness for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Don’t worry if you can’t make it to this event — there are many more film-in-concerts to come. The 2018-19 season is full of film-in-concert performances like E.T., Home Alone and more! Find out more here, or subscribe to CSO’s eClub for the latest updates on prices, promo codes, and more.
