It’s hard to miss the mural on Commonwealth Avenue that boasts giant bananas, grapes, kiwis and other fruits, not to mention a big blender and some hip-looking monkeys. The new smoothie shop Smooth Monkey is getting ready to move into that building at 1801 Commonwealth Avenue with the mural, painted by local artist Ashley Graham. The Peculiar Rabbit, The Rabbit Hole and Jackalope Jacks will be neighbors to the shop.

The four partners behind the concept — along with Emmelie Andersson as general manager — wanted to bring a locally owned and operated smoothie and açaí spot with a community focus to Plaza Midwood.

That’s why 5 percent of profits will be donated to local causes that will rotate on a monthly basis. They will also be looking for input for menu updates (like smoothie of the month) and future causes to support. Plaza Midwood community members actually already chimed in to determine the company’s logo — which features the face of a monkey.

As for the emphasis on monkeys, the partners thought it was a cool character to build around for merchandise and menu creations, with a whimsical approach that fit the eclectic neighborhood.

That whimsy already shows in the menu. Signature smoothies will include the Chunky Monkey (with bananas, peanut butter, cocoa powder and cinnamon) as well as the Funky Monkey (with peach, mango, banana, ginger and orange juice. Pricing will range from about $4-$10, depending on additives like protein powder, honey, sugar and CBD oil.

All smoothies will come unsweetened, and can be made vegan with plant-based milk options.

The açaí bowl names are still in the works, but the base puree will consist of banana acai and strawberry with apple juice. Toppings will range from berries, to granola, to, of course, bananas. A build-your-own option will be available as well. Pricing will range from about $5-$10, depending on size.

Other menu items will include frozen-yogurt shakes, plus grab-and-go options.

While you slurp a smoothie or dig a spoon into your açaí, you’ll be able to sit back in a Reggae/tropical vibe at a bar overlooking the skyline. A few small tables are expected to spring up outside as well.
