Have you ever wondered about all the choices that go into how artwork is presented? Wonder no more! The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art is showcasing its Framing It! exhibition in the second-floor gallery until Feb. 17 to guide viewers into the process behind how art is displayed.

The elements of style

Putting on an exhibit is no simple matter. When the Bechtler displays artworks, caretakers must decide how much historical context to provide, how to light the work, what kind of frame to use and other key factors.

Having a neutral-tone frame may allow some pieces to thrive, while others may be best displayed on vibrantly colored walls. Too often, galleries can be cluttered and thus overwhelm the work and distract from its meaning, but other pieces of art may be understood better when supplemented by complementary frames, colors and intentional design choices.

In the exhibition, Framing It!, visitors step inside the world of a curator and learn how elements of curatorial design can influence the art’s meaning and aesthetic value.
