Whether you’re a first-time homebuyer (or even if your existing home is just in need of some upgrading), then one of the very first things you should consider is finding the right home appliances to fit your needs and budget.

Of course, we’re all familiar with these major appliances, and for the most part, we’re aware that we should have them in our home. But which models should you look for? What features should you be seeking? Learn it all below.

1. Refrigerator

Obviously, you need a fridge. But choosing the model that will work best for your lifestyle can be tough. Your first choice is whether you want to get a side-by-side, French door, top-freezer or bottom-freezer model. (Pro tip: top-freezer models usually cost the least.)

Next, you’ll want to decide which features are the most important to you. Are you interested in temperature-controlled drawers to keep your fruits and veggies fresh? Adjustable shelves so you can fit tall bottles of wine when needed? Do you want to make sure your new refrigerator has an ice maker? How about a water dispenser?

And of course, you’ve got to consider what finish you prefer. Are you going for a stainless steel look, or would you prefer a black or white fridge? Of course, you’ll also want to keep in mind the finish you’ll choose for your other kitchen appliances, if you’d like them to match.

2. Range (i.e. an oven and a cooktop)

When it comes to cooking, you could have a separate oven and cooktop… or you could get a range, which combines the two into a single appliance.

The first thing you’ll need to decide when choosing a range for your kitchen is whether you want it to be gas, electric or dual fuel. From there, you should consider what types of burners you’d prefer (Electric coil burners? Or maybe a glass cooktop?), whether you’re adamant or not about a self-clean feature, and of course what type of finish you’d prefer for your unit so it matches the rest of your kitchen appliances.

3. Washer

If you don’t want to become a regular at the local laundromat, then you’re probably going to need a washing machine of your own!

When shopping for your washer, one of the first things to think about is whether you’d prefer a front-load or a top-load washer. Naturally, if you’re considering doing a stackable washer and dryer set, then front-load will be your best bet. But if you’re going to have the units side by side, the choice is yours. Once you’ve made that decision, you can start thinking about things like the machine’s capacity, the number of cycles it offers and its energy efficiency.

4. Dryer

To be fair, you could hang your clothes out on a line to dry in the fresh air… but that sounds like a lot of work. You’re likely going to want to get a dryer to go with your washer to avoid that inconvenience.

Like with the range, your first question here is going to be whether you’d prefer the dryer to run on gas or electricity. Once you know that, you’ll decide whether you’d prefer a top-load or front-load unit (Pro tip: front load is much more popular for a reason!). Then you can make your decision about factors like capacity, number of cycles and energy efficiency.

5. Dishwasher

Time for the cringe-worthy old HGTV House Hunters joke: “A dishwasher? Isn’t that YOU, honey?” Yup, we’re all laughing. But seriously, life becomes so much easier when you don’t have to hand wash every plate, mug and utensil you use throughout the day.

There are all kinds of dishwashers you can choose from, and your first decision is whether you want yours to be built-in or portable. From there, you can decide on things like what tub material you’d like your unit to have, how many cycles you want it to offer you, what color you want the finish to be and more.
