This post is brought to you in partnership with Opera Carolina. All opinions are our own.
Opera Carolina captivates audiences with moving storylines, powerful performances, impressive costumes and sets, and a truly fantastic arts experience to ignite the senses. Luckily for Charlotte and its surrounding counties, Opera Carolina expands its talented range beyond the Belk Theatre to impact students and families across the southeast.
Besides bringing dynamite entertainment to show goers, Opera Carolina offers several community programs throughout the year aimed at providing educational access, engagement and achievement — and a whole lot of fun — to students, families and the community. In 2019, Opera Carolina is projected to rack up more than 3,000 hours of classroom engagement. Wow!
How might Opera Carolina become part of your life this year?
First Night Experience
During the final dress rehearsal of each grand opera performance, kindergarteners through 12th graders, families and homeschool students are treated to a full opera experience with all the bells and whistles.
If you want to ease into the transformative world of opera and see what all the crooning is about, a First Night Experience is the way to go with low cost tickets, amazing seats, a Q&A with the cast, supertitles and guides to boot. A great way to get close and personal.
Opera Carolina hits the road with its Opera Xpress touring company, made possible by the Litchtin Family Foundation. For 45 years, Opera Xpress has brought musical storytelling to students and teachers in bite-size, 35-minute productions designed for today’s learners.
These talented performers fuse creative sets, costumes and stories with classroom curriculum and effortlessly link the art and education world together. Now that’s something to sing about!
A beloved children story told through the classic art of opera is coming to a neighborhood near you! The Family Opera series is FREE and open to families all across the region. Watch familiar stories come to life sprinkled with magic opera style.
Weekend Opera Xpress performances are held in community venues across the Charlotte area, or you can inquire about bringing a top-notch performance to your neighborhood.
Opera Carolina Academy
If you have a budding Carmen or Rodolfo eager to learn more about opera and make their debut, the Opera Carolina Academy is the place to start. The academy offers local middle school, high school and college students experience and training to realize their dreams of becoming a professional performance singer.
Students at the academy are immersed in music and drama instruction, as well as vocal training with an emphasis in classical music. This is a fantastic opportunity for children to find their voices.
Young people can also get behind the scenes with a week long technical track where students are immersed in the behind-the-scenes aspect of the performing arts. Participants engage with young singers in the company to create scenery and lighting designs for the final recital or stage manage the event.
The classroom becomes a bigger, brighter and more engaging place to learn when strong curriculum is infused with music, drama and the arts. Through pARTnership CMS, Opera Carolina places performers in the classroom who work one-on-one with educators to create an interactive program to effectively support and enhance key curriculum goals.
Educators and performers come together and engage students in the different elements of opera, including acting, dancing, moving, writing, visual art and music. Classrooms and the learning experience is transformed when kids can have fun and master core curriculum at the same time.
Let Opera Carolina take you and your family on an unforgettable experience this year. Discover what great things happen when opera becomes part of your life. Bravo!
