For over 80 years, the nation has celebrated one of life’s favorite sweet treats. This year, June 7 has been declared National Donut Day, and we cannot wait to participate.
As you prepare your strategy on which shops to visit Friday, let’s go through a quick history on how this day came about.
According to the Salvation Army, women volunteering as “donut lassies” began cooking up the fried dough to serve to the troops during World War 1. The dessert became widely popular when the troops, who were known as “doughboys” returned home to the U.S.
Now, on the first Friday in June, the country comes together to pay homage to this delicious ring (or square) of goodness.
There are several shops locally who bake up the historical treats, so we’ve compiled this list to help you celebrate. Don’t worry, the calories won’t count for this. It’s a holiday.

Bring your friends — it feeds 4-6 people.
