Hola, my fellow nacho connoisseurs. Our day is finally here… Happy National Nachos Day! In honor of this very important Nov. 6 holiday, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite nacho joints around the Queen City.
Best nachos for: “I only have $10 in my wallet”
The Supreme Nachos ($6.95 + cost of protein) here are life-changing. I personally am a HUGE fan of Sabor’s house-made chorizo. It’s the perfect blend of spices.
What to expect: A massive pile of tortilla chips smothered in your choice of protein, refried or black beans (I recommend refried), queso, lettuce, sour cream, pico, guacamole and cojita cheese. Bring a friend to help you finish the plate; you’re going to need help.
Added bonus: Most cocktails here are less than $6! So if you find yourself with some extra cash, the Paloma cocktail ($5.95) is an excellent addition to your meal.
3039 South Blvd.
I had the pleasure of meeting this plate of deliciousness while doing a photoshoot of their menu. To say I was excited to try them is an understatement… I mean, look how mouthwateringly beautiful these are! Spoiler Alert: they taste even better than they look.
What to expect: The Greek Nachos ($9) is a hefty mound of chips smothered in cheese and sprinkled with all the Greek frills. Here we have feta, olives, pepperoncinis, tomatoes, cucumbers, cilantro and their spicy tzatziki sauce.
2917 Central Ave.
There’s nothing fancy about this hole-and-the-wall Mexican restaurant off of Central Avenue, but there’s no need for flair when the food tastes so good. During your next tortilla chip quest, go order their Nacho Supreme ($7.99).
What to expect: A large portion of chips topped with ground beef, beans, sour cream, onion, tomato, lettuce, jalapenos, avocado and queso fresco.
Added bonus: On Mondays they have $2.50 Coronas and Corona Lights, plus kids eat free with a paying adult.
Best nachos for: “I had too many beers and need nachos”
If you’re looking for a plate of cheese-pull bliss that’s the size of your torso… your search is over, mi amigo. Not kidding, The Loaded Nachos ($16.99) are huge.
What to expect: This massive plate of cheese covered tortilla chips is piled high with red onions, tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, sour cream, green onions and guacamole. You also get your choice of fajita or buffalo chicken. I recommend the buffalo variety because it’s then drizzled with additional buffalo sauce and ranch.
Added bonus: For the month of November, Duckworth’s Kitchen & Taphouse will be featuring Tofu Nachos ($16.99)! This dish serves 4-6 people and will be available at their Park Road location only (which is the test kitchen for the other Duckworth’s Grill locations). Guests who try it will be asked for their feedback via an iPad survey, elevating the traditional sports bar experience and focusing on guest feedback and involvement.
2718 Monroe Rd.
Their Throw Down Nachos with Chili (8.95) are hands-down one of my favorite things to order after a night of drinking. They’re ooey-gooey delicious and the absolute cure to the hangover blues.
What to expect: A delightful pile of chips pleasantly drowning in Lupie’s signature chili, refried beans, cheddar cheese and jalapenos. Sour cream and salsa are optional but highly recommended ($1.20 each).
Their Super Nachos ($8.75 + cost of protein) are simply that, super. Every time I’m here I always forget to snap a photo because I’m busy stuffing my face with an endless amount of chips and salsa. It looks like I’m not the only one because I failed to find a photo online to share here. Sorry guys, you’ll just have to trust me on this one.
What to expect: Mounds of chips covered in beans, cheddar cheese, guacamole, sour cream, tomatoes and onions. Add a margarita and continue the party from last night.
Best nachos for: “I didn’t know they had nachos here”
This BBQ joint’s Nachos Libre with Chopped Pork ($10.99) is so beautiful to feast your eyes upon that it actually lures folks from surrounding tables to get up and come into your personal space to gaze at your entree. (No joke, this actually happened. I’m a nice person so I gave them a bite off my plate.)
What to expect: A beast portion of tortilla chips that are topped with diced tomatoes, black beans, smoked corn, cilantro, cheddar, diced jalapenos, queso and a heavy drizzle of spicy habanero sauce with lime sour cream.
110 S.Sharon Amity Rd.
If you’re looking for nachos with a bit of a kick, I suggest trying the Improper Nachos ($6.50 + cost of protein). Have you ever eaten something and immediately thought “oh, that’s different and I like it”?
What to expect: House-made pimento cheese served on top of a bed of salt & vinegar chips and garnished with scallions. You can also add your choice of smoked chicken, brisket or pork.
Best nachos for: “Can I have a base other than tortilla chips?”
1402 Winnifred St.
Permanently situated Tuesday – Sunday on the back porch of Hoppin’, Twisted Eats Food Truck serves up some of the city’s most unique pub fare that’s made from scratch on a daily basis.
What to expect: #WONTONNACHOS! Birds the Word ($10) comes with pulled chicken, blended cheddar, crispy kale, diced tomato, black olives, candied cherry peppers and a white bbq sauce… all smothered on top of fried wonton chips.
919 South McDowell St.
This make-your-own poke bowl establishment is stepping things up a notch with their take on nachos. Your meal possibilities are plentiful at this Hawaiian-inspired eatery.
What to expect: The Poke Nachos ($10.95) come with a wonton base that’s topped with ahi tuna, avocado, scallions, crispy garlic, cucumber, seaweed salad, Hawaiian sea salt, tomato, pickled red onion, creamy togarashi and sweet soy reduction sauce.
1300 Central Ave.
The Loaded Nachos, But Fries ($7) is a spud-tastic tribute to our Nacho friends we keep so dear to our hearts. These are nacho-average-potatoes.
What to expect: Fresh cut fries covered in brew cheese, brew chili, Taos black beans, diced tomatoes, sliced jalapeños, chopped red onion, sliced green onions and sour cream.
