Picture your perfect date night: A special someone, a delicious dinner, and an evening of beautiful music. Maybe your date enjoys jazz music and has been wanting to see it live, but you’ve never actually gone. And a rock concert is not going to cut it.
Thankfully, the Charlotte Jazz Initiative makes it easy to find the sweet sounds you’re looking for: The Jazz Room at the Stage Door Theater will present Kobie Watkins plays Philly Joe Jones on Nov. 17 and 18 for two shows per night. This is your chance to impress your date with your level of jazz sophistication.
To get you started on this sophistication, here’s a list of fast facts. The show:
Pays tribute to jazz legend “Philly Joe” Jones. The iconic jazz drummer Jones was a native of Philadelphia who toured with the Miles Davis Quintet in the mid-1950s. Davis even said Jones was his “favorite drummer.” And why the name “Philly Joe” Jones? He had to distinguish himself from Count Basie’s drummer, Jo Jones. “Philly Joe” Jones passed away in 1985 at the age of 62.
Gives you sweet jazz drums and more. This show is not just about the drums, although they’ll certainly be featured. The performance will include a full jazz quintet with Kobie as the lead drummer. The drums will be at the perfect volume, where you and your date can enjoy the dynamic, energetic performance without earplugs.
Features original music by “Philly Joe” Jones himself. The shows give you a chance to learn about this legendary artist as part of the Charlotte Jazz Initiative’s monthly series. As he’s channeling this music, Kobie is animated and engaging, and he’ll also be playing some original music he’s composed himself. He’s coming into town from Durham, NC with members of his own jazz band.
Has the perfect intimate location for a date. The theatre only fits about 200 people, and there’s a bar inside, so you can get up in the middle of the show and get a drink from the bar that’s in the same room. Need another cocktail between performances? You’ll be able to easily grab drinks for two.
Ready to make that date? Enjoy one or both 90-minute shows at 6 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. on November 17 and 7 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. on November 18. Tickets are $14 in advance. Learn more about the show here and buy your tickets here.
