North Carolina has a reputation for turning out some top-of-the-line musicians. Think Earl Scruggs, The Avett Brothers, Ben Folds Five, Luke Combs and so many more.
This month, another N.C. native son and jazz phenom, Thelonious Monk, turns 102. To celebrate the big day, a fellow award-winner from the Tar Heel State, Ernest Turner, heads to The Jazz Room to honor the legend with an all out jazz thrown down Oct. 18 and 19.
This top-notch performance is also the official kickoff to The Jazz Room season! Come be part of the big time celebration and enjoy a fabulous night in Uptown Charlotte.
‘Treat’ yourself with the sounds of Thelonious Monk
Born Oct. 10, 1917 in Rocky Mount, N.C., Monk’s talent and style helped put our region on the map. He was recognized in the North Carolina Hall of Fame as the creator of modern jazz and bebop with songs like “Well, you Needn’t”, “Blue Monk” and “Round Midnight.”
Monk thrilled audiences with his dark sunglasses and improvisational style on the piano. He was known to take a break from tickling the ivories to show off his dance moves during performances. He also holds the record as the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington.
Ernest Turner returns to The Jazz Room to play Monk — meet him Oct. 18
Turner is no stranger to The Jazz Room, and this time he’s bringing his band with him. The Durham native is an award-winning pianist and composer who has recorded with some big, big names like John Legend and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.
He started playing piano at age four and has developed a high-octane style that brings infectious energy and thoughtfulness to the stage. These qualities make him the perfect fit for a tribute to Thelonious Monk.
This month, take your lunch break to the next level and meet Turner outside the Stage Door Theater from noon-1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18. This free event is funded by the North Carolina Arts Council.
Kickoff performance is the perfect treat for the season
A night at The Jazz Room is the perfect treat for grown ups (and those dressed up like grown ups). No tricks here, only music from some of the best artists in the country, a cozy atmosphere, right-priced tickets ($14 at the door; $16 in advance), a bar serving up drinks to wet your whistle and not a bad seat in the house.
With four performances to choose from (Friday, 6-7:30 p.m. and 8:15-9:45 p.m. and Saturday 7-8:30 p.m. and 9:15-10:45 p.m.) this is a fun night every mummy will enjoy.
Go big or gourd home with epic performances and a kick off weekend at The Jazz Room!
