In case you haven’t already heard, March 8 is International Women’s Day. Today’s the day to celebrate achievements of women around the globe – and to continue fighting for gender equality.

The official theme of International Women’s Day 2018 is #PressforProgress. As stated on the IWD website: “Now, more than ever, there’s a strong call-to-action to press forward and progress gender parity. A strong call to #PressforProgress. A strong call to motivate and unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive.”

Ready to raise up your fellow women in support of this global celebration of female achievement? We rounded up a few International Women’s Day events and activities you can be a part of today, right here in Charlotte.

3rd Annual Charlotte International Women’s Day at International House

6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Free. International House, 1817 Central Ave.

The Charlotte International Women’s Day Committee invites you to celebrate the history, contributions and achievements of women at an inspirational and motivational event featuring women from around the city.

The event will start with registration, networking and light bites, then move into opening remarks from Ella Scarborough, Chair of the Board of County Commissioners. Next, you’ll hear from the keynote speaker Dr. Maha Gingrich, CPCC International Community Liaison, Assistant to VP Foundation and an internationally successful TV host. At 7:30 p.m. comes the call to action: the #PressforProgress ballot, encouraging women to engage in their civic duties.

Then, listen to the beautiful music of a local female harpist, and join in on the cultural dance performances of troupes from the Philippines, India, Africa and Latin America. Don’t forget to stick around for closing remarks at 8:30 p.m. to see if you’re the lucky winner of any door prizes! More details here.

Fabulous Feminist Cross-Stitch: Crafty Hour with Crowned Sparrow Co. at Catalyst

6:30 – 8:30 p.m. $22. Catalyst, 255 W. Martin Luther King Blvd.

Cross-stitch hoops have recently seen a surge in popularity, thanks to all the aesthetically pleasing photos of them circulating on Etsy and Instagram. Craft a cross-stitch creation of your own in celebration of International Women’s Day at this feminist-themed “crafty hour” with Crowned Sparrow Co.

All the materials you’ll need to create one six-inch hoop will be provided, and they’ll teach you the basics on how to cross-stitch before you choose from one of six feminist designs. Then, you’ll learn a few ways to finish your piece and how to display it in your home (or office) when you’re done. Bonus: class is BYOB, so you can sip and snack while you craft. Learn more here.

  1. Disappointed in your choice of pictures for feminist cross stitch …. celebrating women shouldn’t be aligned with promoting crude base language…. that lowers us, not heightens us.
