Need a drinking break from the craft beers that you find in South End or NoDa? Barking Duck Brewing Company in Mint Hill has got you covered.
College roommates and American Airlines co-workers Josh Carl and Jacob Reynolds balance working for a busy airline with brewing and selling their beer. While the location is hard to find at first — behind the Food Lion, through a gate and in the back of a warehouse — Carl or Reynolds is there to greet you, pour you a pint and strike up a knowledgeable conversation about beer.
The guys make different batches of beer each week including their popular Break Time Session IPA and Big Belly Milk Stout. I love IPAs so I knew Break Time Session would be on point, but I was pleasantly surprised by the milky smoothness of the Big Belly after thinking it would taste too harsh.
One of their most popular beers is the Chinese Chicken Sriracha Pale Ale that typically sells out on the first day it’s ready. And the guys aren’t afraid to blend and brew any ingredients, including the deadly hot Carolina Reeper chili from Rock Hill, S.C., for their spicy IPA concoction.
So how did they get the name Barking Duck? Part of the name comes from the yellow labs barking on their porch while they made home brews. And the other part comes from their “research” at Duckworth’s, as they considered clever names while “experimenting” with other beers.
Since the guys are balancing two full-time jobs, the brewing company is only open on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays from noon-10 p.m.
Barking Duck Brewing Company is definitely worth driving 20 minutes from Charlotte for a few drinks with friends. And it’s in a prime location to get some growlers as you’re heading to watch a show at PNC Music Pavilion or coming off a nearby golf course like Olde Sycamore Plantation. They do sell some batches to local spots like The Beer Growler on South Boulevard.
They’ll be having their one-year anniversary celebration on Saturday, Sept. 19 starting at 1 p.m. Check out the live music, food and fun.
Safe drinking, friends.
