4 ways getting carded is good for you

This post is brought to you in partnership with Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. All opinions are our own.

Library Card Sign-Up Month is upon us, and that could only mean one thing for residents of Charlotte’s Mecklenburg County: FREE access to a wealth of resources right at your physical — and digital — fingertips. All you’ll need to do is sign-up for a Charlotte Mecklenburg County Library card, which can be done online, or in person at a branch near you. If you need a bit more coaxing on how a library card can benefit your life, we’ve got you covered. Obtaining a library card can help you:

Make connections that count

With more than 60 people relocating to the Queen City each day, it’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of city life. It may also be difficult to find events or groups that cater to your interest. But, that’s only until you find your local library branch. Offering 25,000+ programs each year and WelcomeCLT, there is truly something for every cardholder at the library.

Whether you love conversing with others in a foreign language (there are Spanish-English conversation groups and English-German storytime), want to join a travel group or plan your next international adventure (Armchair Travel, anyone?) or, maybe even indulge in cosplay with other fans of Harry Potter, a library card provides you access to fellowship with community members who share your similar interests and an affinity for exploration, laughter and learning.

Go green (digital)

Audiobooks, e-books and streaming videos enable cardholders to experience reading and learning in a whole new way. If you’re someone who likes to listen to music or podcasts while working out, commuting to work, or doing household chores, your library card provides free access to resources like OverDrive, Libby, hoopla and NC Kids Digital Library (yes, your kids or a kid you know can benefit from having a library card as well).

Digital resources are portable, won’t ever get lost, and the best thing about e-books and some audiobooks? They often return themselves on their due date, which is one less thing you’ll have to remember.

Improve self/professional development

In the same way you can access digital resources for entertainment, you can also access online business tools, webinars and in-person trainings to take both your personal and professional skills to the next level. Cardholders have access to training videos through Lynda.com, technical tutoring, can learn a new language with Mango Languages, close the digital divide (you’re never too young or too old) by taking hands-on digital literacy classes, or even take advantage of Job Help resources such as social security disability and employee rights webinars, resume writing, help and coachinggain control over your finances or even explore new career opportunities.

Catch up on films or TV shows you missed

Life happens. Sometimes, we miss out on documentaries or TV shows that we wanted to watch. Or maybe there’s an educational program we wanted a child in our lives to experience. A Charlotte Mecklenburg Library card provides access to resources like Kanopy, which can help bring you back up to speed. So sign-up for a library card and get back in the game!

The crazy thing is this: the list we provided doesn’t even scratch the surface of all the goodness the library and your pending library card have in store. The library has everything you need for entertainment, self-improvement and to dive into a world of infinite possibilities. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of a stronger community — sign-up for a Library card today!
