The Wafflewich is back: Find out where FūD is expanding next

In early 2018, the announcement that FūD would part ways from its home at Salud Cerveceria sent social media into a frenzy. “Where would we get our Wafflewichs now?” customers asked.

After spending some time running the kitchen at Queen City Grounds, FūD Owner Jeff McElwee is ready to make his return.

Jamie Bradish, one of the owners Red Clay Ciderworks, reached out to McElwee with a plan of turning their employee lounge into a kitchen, McElwee told CharlotteFive.

“I used to do some grab and go catering for them in addition to having done several events there over the years. I’ve known them since Red Clay was just about to open and we’ve had a great relationship ever since,” McElwee said. “It’s in a great part of town, with a beautiful taproom and facility, with a team of amazing people. It was a no-brainer.”

With this announcement comes the return of the eatery’s famous Wafflewichs. Charlotte can expect to get their fill of the Chicken and Waffles as well as the ‘You’re Killin’ Me’ S’Mores Wafflewich, both featured on The Food Network’s Diners, ‘Drive-Ins and Dives.’

Expect the return of FūD classics like the Sketti Cone — a garlic bread waffle cone filled with spaghetti and meatballs — in addition to some new items as well as vegan options.

“The menu will start off fairly small and will increase in scale as we get our bearings.”

If you’ve grown to love the menu at Queen City Grounds, don’t worry. McElwee and the team at FūD will continue to oversee that menu as well.

“The sky is the limit at Red Clay. Our kitchen will be small but that has yet to stop us.”

Expect a late July, early August opening, right in time for Red Clay’s 4 year anniversary. An official announcement will be made via the FūD on the MūV on Instagram and Facebook.
