Local rock and roll band To Better Waters stopped by for the latest C5 Couch Session, an intimate concert right in the middle of the CharlotteFive offices.

The group, which consists Matt Susong, Alex Warner, Joel Turner, Paul Manos and Pat Allois, played three songs off its new album, “Hope In Spades.”

The group writes songs about more abstract concepts, using an almost-Mad Libs style approach during some writing sessions for songs like “Millennium.” Matt, Alex and Paul played that song, “Not Forever” and “Southpaw.”

To Better Waters often plays at shows at breweries, and people like to come up and ask them to play covers. Some of the most popular requests: “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd and Hootie and the Blowfish. I requested some Rihanna. Maybe next time.

Didn’t get enough? You can catch To Better Waters at two upcoming shows in Charlotte:

– September 22: NoDa Brewing
– October 7: Legion Brewing

When you head out to see the band play, look for the owl mascot named Bitey that they bring to every show.

To Better Water’s new album, “Hope in Spades” — as well as “Days of Ours” and “Nights of Ours” — are available on SpotifyiTunesAmazon and SoundCloud. Visit tobetterwaters.com to learn more.
