The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art is more than just a gorgeous building Uptown. Since the museum opened in 2010, it’s become one of Charlotte’s most important cultural institutions. In a city not always known for its art scene (we’re getting there!), the Bechtler has positioned itself as a crowning achievement for arts in the city.
In preparation for the Bechtler’s 10th anniversary in January 2020, starting Nov. 17, 2018 and continuing through March 17, 2019, the museum will present “Bechtler Unseen: Works From the 50s and 60s.” This exhibition will present more than 100 works from the Bechtler collection that have never been displayed to the public before.
The “Bechtler Unseen” exhibit includes works from Joan Miró, Georges Braque, Jean (Hans) Arp and Pablo Picasso, among many other influential artists. Viewers can find pieces from several artists whose work has rarely been seen anywhere in the country – including many women and non-European artists.
The Bechtler is having a members-only exhibition preview and reception on Friday, Nov. 16. Bechtler members will experience the “Bechtler Unseen” exhibit a day early while enjoying drinks and light bites in the fourth-floor galleries. The members-only event includes a jazz performance by Suit Up featuring Ziad Rabie.
Do you want to go, but you’re not a member of the Bechtler yet? It’s super easy to sign up for an annual membership online. You can also contact Mat Duncan by emailing email@example.com or calling 704.353.9207 for questions about membership or to RSVP to the event if you are already a member.
Once a member of the Bechtler, admission is totally free. If you go to the museum six times in a year, you’ve paid for an individual membership. If you choose a family membership, you’ll cover the cost of a membership in just five visits.
Plus, memberships include all sorts of fun benefits beyond free admission. Bechtler members receive exclusive invitations to museum events like the Bechtler Unseen opening reception, an invitation to an annual member appreciation event, a 10 percent discount at the museum store, discounted admission to museum programs and member privileged at several partner museums throughout the Southeast.
Swap out the usual dinner and movie night for an artsy Bechtler by Night event, impress your date at a jazz concert or Modernism + Film program at the museum or spend a lazy day off exploring artwork or browsing the museum gift shop. Through February 17, in addition to the year-round collection always available at the museum, you can catch the “Framing It!” exhibition, which explores all the considerations that go into framing a piece of art.
