On Saturday, June 3, the 500 block of South Tryon Street will transform into a creative hot spot where you can artfully create, dance, experience and listen – all for FREE. From 11 a.m.-4 p.m., the #LongLiveArts FREE Community Festival will offer interactive exhibits, music, competitions, activities, food, live entertainment and lots of “WOW” factor. All this with FREE admission to the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture and Mint Museum Uptown and FREE docent-led ARTBREAK tours at all three museums. Here’s how you can create, dance, experience, listen and eat artfully on June 3.
If you find yourself near a CREATE sign at the festival, there’s no telling what you will do. You could take part in a writing workshop, compete in a portrait paint off, watch local painter Bree Stallings, make a collage inspired by the Firebird outside the Bechtler or repurpose your old t-shirt with a new screen printed design. We say groovy.
What is a festival without dancing? Luckily, you won’t have to find out. Look for the DANCE signs and enjoy the musical beat of Cuban jazz. Get your grove on with members of the Charlotte Repertory Dance Theatre as they teach you cool new moves to impress all your friends (or at least keep them entertained). Keep the party going and learn a folk dance from Gujrat, India. And don’t forget to fly high with Caroline Calouche & Company Aerials and Contemporary Dance company.
Meet your friends near the EXPERIENCE signs and watch an interactive story about West African culture. Feel the beat and enjoy the amazing things that happen when you pull up a chair and drum it out in a circle. Or be a judge at the Binders’ Multi-Artist Paint-Off and vote on your favorite creation.
Your ears deserve equal treatment and this festival wouldn’t dream of leaving them out. Find a LISTEN sign and met one of Charlotte’s most talented artists, Kenya Templeton, who can teach you (yes, you) how to scat. And your toes will know what to do when classical instruments and operatic vocals meet Hip Hop, Neo Soul and turntables.
Trust us, you are going to need some nutrients served from a truck to keep up your energy to enjoy all these amazing art offerings. Don’t worry, they have that covered too. With My Sausage Buddy, OooWee BBQ, Spice Street and Sprinkles ready to serve, you’ll have enough good eats to make it through the day smiling.
Don’t miss one of arts biggest days in Uptown Charlotte June 3. Your eyes, ears, body, heart and mind will be glad you did. Ready to plan a great day? Visit www.levinecenterarts.org or call 704-322-4728.
