Local music fans might want to put their hands over their ears for this one.
Just a few months after the closing of the Chop Shop and Tremont Music Hall, Central Piedmont is in talks to buy the Elizabeth lot that includes the Double Door Inn, according to Observer reporter Katherine Peralta.
The popular, historic venue opened in the old house at 1218 Charlottetowne Drive in 1973, and hosted a slew of artists from various genres over the year, including soul, jazz, funk, bluegrass and fusion.
Eric Clapton stopped by one night in the early 1980s and sat in with the Legendary Blues Band, after playing a concert at the old Charlotte Coliseum, according to the venue’s Facebook page.
Double Door owner Nick Karres said the future of the Double Door Inn is unclear. The college has a 120-day period of due diligence, which ends in early June. At that point, it could back out, Karres said.
What is clear:
– The college has an agreement to buy the 1.2-acre parcel next door for $5.9 million.
– The businesses on that property — CP Text Books, Shiraz Grill, Fortune Cookie Chinese, Red Sea Ethiopian and Ereatrien Cuisine and Bar, Cuisine Malaya, City Deli & Bagel, and Crown Station Coffee House & Pub — are on month-to-month leases that won’t be renewed.
– CPCC plans to use the property for “the future growth of the central campus,” spokesman Jeff Lowrance said.

Hawthorne’s Pizza coming to Monroe Road development
Hawthorne’s NY Pizza and Bar will anchor the retail portion of the mixed-use development on Monroe Road, between Conference Drive and Idlewild Road (Corey’s neck of the woods).
The 4,800-square-foot pizza restaurant will take up about half of a planned 10,000-square-foot building near Conference Drive, and will have outdoor seating. The building is planned to start construction next month and open in the fall.
