10 things to do At Charlotte SHOUT!

We teamed up with Blumenthal Arts to bring you 10 awesome activities out of the more than 75 events you can expect when you attend Charlotte SHOUT!, running through May 11 across uptown Charlotte.

The bunnies of Intrude

1. ‘Intrude’

Through May 11; 10 a.m.-midnight; The Green. FREE

Some very large white rabbits, illuminated in stark white light, have been invading festivals around the world and now they’re invading Charlotte! The bunnies of Intrude stand tall yet relaxed and appear to be quite at home in their new patch.

2. Concerts at The Garden Tent

May 5-8; 7:30 p.m.; Romare Bearden Park. Tickets here

Charlotte SHOUT! will feature some rollicking grooves with the music of Davina and the Vagabonds, The New Respects, Raul Midon and Con Brio. Tickets are sure to go fast, so make sure you get yours while they last!

3. Blue Lapis Light

May 10-11; 9 p.m.; Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center. FREE

For the first time ever, Charlotte will see Blue Lapis Light dance company gracefully perform 15 stories high on the side of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center. A 30-minute piece created just for Charlotte SHOUT!, “Reflection” is about our humanity and our connections to one another, to this earth and to the wisdom of experiences. Each breathtaking movement sequence of “Reflection” creates images of transcendent beauty, while highlighting the human journey.

4. Headphone Disco

May 9-11; 8 p.m.; The Tent at Romare Bearden. $10 in advance, $5 at the door after 9:30 p.m.

At Headphone DiscoYOU get to choose which DJ’s music you like best as they battle it out for the crowd’s attentionThis surreal spectacle removes the sound system and arms party-goers with a set of wireless headphones, while three separate DJs broadcast to them over three FM channels. Half the crowd might be bouncing to EDM, while the other jams out to hip- hop.

Written and directed in Charlotte by Charlotteans, the first-ever MADE IN CLT spotlight show features original pieces completely unique to the Queen City. You will laugh, snap and be moved by Award-winning, internationally recognized spoken-word artist Carlos Robson for his passionately unfiltered perspective of our rapidly-changing city. Plus, enjoy a sneak peek of Charlotte’s freshest sketch comedy collaborative as the Charlotte Sketch Project takes a humorous look at politics, dating, aging and the Queen City.

6. Choir! Choir! Choir!

May 8; 7:30 p.m.; McGlohon Theater. FREE, requires registration here

Choir! Choir! Choir! is an immersive, interactive experience where the audience becomes the choir in a powerful musical collaboration. Equal parts singing, comedy and community-building, the night unfolds like a dream. You get a lyric sheet at the door, DaBu teach you the vocal arrangement and a video is recorded. You don’t need to know how to read music. Just show up, you’ll get lyrics and they’ll teach you everything you need to sound great.

7. Lunch Hour Concerts

May 6-10; 11:45 a.m.; Levine Center for the Arts. FREE

Grab lunch and come see brilliant performers brighten your day. The venue will play host to musical guests throughout the week, including Bakalao All-Stars, Velvet Caravan, Vadim Kolpakov, Chocala and Drumstrong.

8. Manual Cinema’s ‘No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks’

May 8; 7:30 p.m.; Knight Theater. $25 and up. Tickets here.

Part poetry, film, music, intricate paper puppetry and live actors working in shadow, Manual Cinema’s “No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks” is an unforgettable multi-media experience that celebrates the life of an icon, poet laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner. Brooks was also a treasured educator and mentor to the countless writers and children who knew her as their very own “Miss Brooks.” Come witness the course of one of the most remarkable careers in American literary history.

9. Headliners at the Atrium Health Main Stage

May 9-11; opening acts at 5 p.m., headliners at 9 p.m.; Romare Bearden Park. Various prices here

The big concerts on the Atrium Health Main Stage are sure to set you dancing. This year, the stage plays host to Anthony Hamilton on May 9, Umphries McGee on May 10 and Bleachers on May 11. Get your tickets using the above link and mark your calendars now.

10. L’Homme Cirque – David Dimitri’s One Man Circus

May 9-11; showtimes found here; First Ward Park. $20 general admission

David Dimitri’s L’homme Cirque balances dramatic feats like high wire flips and a human cannon launch with humor, poetry and serenades on the accordion. Lauded “Lord of the Wire” by New York Times, this world-famous high wire dancer and veteran of Cirque du Soleil and Big Apple Circus creates what he calls “a unique magic” as he performs an entire circus, all alone. It’s perfect for the whole family.
