How Charlotte dads are joining a BYOB (bring your own baby) beer gathering [Partner]

BYOB usually means bring your own beer, but for this growing group of Charlotte dads, it also means bring your own baby. On Sunday, February 19, the local birth center Baby+Company will sponsor their Dads+Bags+Brews event at Birdsong Brewing Company, a monthly pint-filled brewery hangout for dads and dads-to-be.

“We’re working to grow and connect the Charlotte dads community,” says Jessica Ewing, Baby+Company’s Community Outreach Manager.

Dads+Bags+Brews is a monthly event held at different breweries around Charlotte. The event started last month and encourages dads and dads-to-be to stop by for an IPA and a round of cornhole while sporting a Baby Bjorn. Participants say it’s a validating, fun experience from the other side of the parent spectrum (although moms are welcome to join if they’d like).

“Fatherhood is parallel with motherhood,” says Jaime, father to a 16-month-old daughter, who attended last month. “Moms are going through a huge transition, and so are dads. We all need support during this huge change in life, and a lot of that comes from other dads going through it too.”

Even when beer happy hour is over, Baby+Company works to form meaningful relationships with dads during the birth, prenatal and postpartum processes. Their team of educators, registered nurses, Certified Nurse midwives and practice managers are focused on a holistic family experience for those who need pre-conception support before trying to conceive, or are expecting or recently had their baby. They provide in-person relationship building and personalized maternity care as well as information on their weekly blog.

“Having a new baby comes with all kinds of emotions,” writes Emily Pardy, a counselor and founder of Ready Nest Counseling in Nashville, TN, in a blog for Baby+Company. “New parents can be overcome with joy, wrought with worry, filled with relief, or all of the above. The truth is, there is no ‘right’ way to feel when you enter into the new role of becoming a mom or dad.”

In addition to the blogs and brews, there’s a closed online group for dads in Charlotte to chat, connect, share resources, ask for advice and share wins and fails. It’s the online equivalent of what Baby + Company is trying to create at the real live events.

“In a city of transplants, Dads + Bags + Brews provides a unique opportunity to mix meeting new parents with trying new beers in a relaxed judgement-free venue,” says Paul, a father of a one-year-old. “You really can’t go wrong.”

Baby+Company is hoping this new monthly event will build a bridge for these kind of feelings, encouraging a dialog between dads that may have not otherwise met while reading the blog or attending in-house events. They want to connect the people behind the experiences, all while enjoying a cold one.

There’s also the Charlotte Dad’s Group, which Baby+Company has partnered with them for this event and to provide dads with additional preparation classes and connections.

The next Dads+Bags+Brews after February is on Sunday, March 19 at Sycamore Brewing from 2 to 4 p.m. Get that diaper bag ready, dads.
