Now that 2017 is finally here, the phrase, “New Year, New You” keeps popping up. How exactly do you create a “new you”? Most would say fitness. Skip the usual gym membership this year in exchange for something a bit more fun: Yelp Fit Club.
For the past two years, Yelp’s Community Director Nikki Wolfe has been hosting various Yelp Fit Club sessions—usually about a month-long blitz of exercise classes from across the city. Yelp Fit Club 2017 features events throughout the entire year, hopefully around two to three events a month, Wolfe said (perfect for those with New Year’s resolutions).
“My thinking for that is one, so I can keep my sanity this year, and also to keep healthy living top-of-mind for people throughout the entire year,” she said. “The whole idea of Yelp Fit Club in general is to show you that fitness and healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring. A lot of people associate Yelp with food, obviously, but it really is your go-to to find everything. True story, I found my new go-to tire place on Yelp last month.”
Kick off a year of fitness with Fit Club 2017’s first event on Jan. 21, Get Fit Don’t Sit Fitness Fair with the Charlotte Hornets. This event is ticketed, but it’s one of the cheapest ways to attend a Hornets game. Here’s how it works: on the event page, click the link for tickets and enter the promo code GETFIT and pick your ticket level (prices range from $19 to $41). Your ticket gets you into the on-court workout and fitness fair from noon until 1:30 p.m. on the day of the event, and also gets you into the game that night, with tip-off at 7 p.m.
You don’t have to be in the NBA to do work on this court. Get Fit Don’t Sit tickets on sale now. Includes: access to our health/wellness fair featuring 20 local vendors, an on court workout class, AND a ticket to the @hornets game that night. Click the link in our profile for full details. Ticket proceeds benefit the @amdiabetesclt. 📸: @imsofirst #hornets #buzzcity #NBA @spectrumcenter
The workout includes five stations—stair climbers, vertical jump, dribble obstacle course, shot caller, wanna be a baller (10 pushups then shooting at the basket), and defensive slides. There’s also a kids workout zone with jump rope, running in place, jump n’ jacks, and the Air Jordan Pop A Shot challenge.
The fair includes local healthy vendors like AIR Aerial Fitness, Clean Juice Bar, Nourish, NC Yoga Bar and Viva Raw. Ticket proceeds benefit the American Diabetes Association, and Tito’s Handmade Vodka will match the donation up to $2,000.
Other free workouts coming to the series this year include classes at Kinetic Heights, HSM | Core, First Wind Cycling & Fitness, Core Revolution and Burn Boot Camp.
