Happy North Carolina Beer Month! In honor of April’s month long holiday, I decided to take a look at some of the best beers brewed here in Charlotte. Previously, we’ve used the Untappd app to rank the best breweries in town. The app allows users to explore their area beer scene, while ranking both the beers and the breweries on a five-point scale.

With that in mind, we used Untappd again to take a look at what you are saying are the nine best beers made right here in the Queen City.

(9) Peanut Butter Jelly Time

via Catawba’s Instagram

Brewery: Catawba Brewing Co.
Style: Brown Ale – American
Rating: 3.64
Description: “This beer begins life as a light brown ale that provides the bready qualities of the base beer. After fermentation, it is rested on whole roasted peanuts and all-natural raspberry puree, which truly transforms this into a PB&J sandwich in a glass.”
Fun place to try it besides the brewery: This is one of Catawba’s specialty beers, so it is not always available at the brewery. Lucky for you, VBGB (920 Hamilton St.) currently has it on tap for $6 for a 12-oz. pour. Go full-blown nostalgia and enjoy this beer inspired by a favorite elementary school lunch option while playing a game of giant Connect 4.

(8) Mash-Up

Brewery: Resident Culture Brewing Company
Style: IPA – American
Rating: 3.76
Description: “This east coast/west coast mashup uses an east coast malt bill with wheat and heavy doses of oats, including malted oats, flaked oats and golden naked oats. It was hopped with more traditional west coast hops including Simcoe, El Dorado and Comet.”
Fun place to try it besides the brewery: This IPA is currently available at The Cellar at Duckworth’s (330 N. Tryon St). This beer will be perfect to enjoy with a variety of different shareable small plates on your next date night.

(7) Higher Ground IPA

Brewery: Birdsong Brewing Co.
Style: IPA – American
Rating: 3.76
Description: “Well balanced with specialty crystal malts and a pleasant citrus aroma, this beer has notes of grapefruit and honeysuckle. Hopped with Columbus, Cascade, Galena and Zythos hops. Lovingly dry hopped with Cascade.”
Fun place to try it besides the brewery: Birdsong offers it year-round, but it also stays on tap at 5Church (127 N. Tryon St). Get a group of your coworkers together and grab a glass and enjoy a charcuterie board at the bar right after work.

(6) Overachiever

Brewery: Wooden Robot Brewery
Style: Pale Ale – American
Rating: 3.76
Description: “Overachiever exceeds expectations by packing the citrusy, juicy hop character of a hazy NE-style IPA into an obsessively drinkable pale ale.  Brewed with local malt from our friends at Epiphany Craft Malt, oats, Simcoe and Centennial hops, the soft mouthfeel and restrained bitterness will have you coming back for sip after sip.”
Fun place to try it besides the brewery: You can get a glass of Overachiever from the tap at 204 North (204 North Tryon St.) for $6. The restaurant is offering special brunch promotions on both Easter and Mother’s Day, so go celebrate the holidays and enjoy this smooth pale ale.

(5) Juicy Jay

via Legion’s Instagram

Brewery: Legion Brewing Company
Style: IPA – American
Rating: 3.85
Description: “Mosaic, El Dorado and Cascade hops join in harmony to produce a juicy, tropical treat with a distinct, dry finish. Each of these hops will dance along your tongue and gather for the grand finale.”
Fun place to try it besides the brewery: This is definitely one of the more prominent beers in town, so it shouldn’t be hard to find, but might I recommend enjoying it on the patio at Moo & Brew (1300 Central Ave.)? Grab a burger — I’m a fan of the Backyard Classic with bacon – and a brew while enjoying some nice weather with friends.

(4) What He’s Having IPA

via Wooden Robot’s Instagram

Brewery: Wooden Robot Brewery
Style: IPA – American
Rating: 3.90
Description: “Brewed with over three pounds of bold, American hops per barrel. This IPA combines citrus and tropical fruit notes with a silky, light body and restrained bitterness.” Also, you can now purchase this IPA in 16 oz. cans to take home and enjoy.
Fun place to try it besides the brewery: Who doesn’t love some beer and barbecue? Head to Queen City Q (225 East Sixth St.) and pair up this IPA with some jumbo wings.

(3) Whatever You Feel Just Dance It

via Resident Culture’s Instagram

Brewery: Resident Culture Brewing Company
Style: IPA – New England
Rating: 4.00
Description: “New England style IPA brewed with flaked oats and double dry hopped with generous amounts of Citra, Mosaic and Vic Secret.”
Fun place to try it besides the brewery: Resident Culture just finished a batch of this IPA in early March. It has been featured at The Hop Shop (818 Lamar Ave.), so definitely go check it out when it is available at the self-described “coffee shop for beer”.

(2) Hop, Drop ‘n Roll

via NoDa Brewing’s Instagram

Brewery: NoDa Brewing Company
Style: IPA – American
Rating: 4.02
Description: “2014 World Beer Cup Gold Award Winner, American-Style IPA. Hops in your face. Crisp, mouthwatering, American citrus hops dominate for an ideal IPA character. It’s hopped before, during and after the boil with late boil additions of Citra and Amarillo for a complex flavor profile. The rich golden color comes from a blend of English and American base malts accented with substantial amounts of Vienna and Wheat malt. This is the beer that started it all for NoDa Brewing.”
Fun place to try it besides the brewery: You can grab a Hop, Drop ‘n Roll at Caswell Station for $6.25. However, if you go on a Wednesday, all North Carolina drafts are just $3.50. This IPA will pair nicely with Caswell’s Easter Brunch, when they’ll be serving up a prime rib special.

(1) Good Morning Vietnam

via Wooden Robot’s Instagram

Brewery: Wooden Robot Brewery
Style: Coffee Vanilla Blonde Ale
Rating: 4.08
Description: “Made with locally roasted Ethiopian Coffee from our friends at Enderly Coffee Roasters and rich Madagascar Vanilla Beans. The result is a unique beer that is both approachable and complex.”
Fun place to try it besides the brewery: Jekyll & Hyde Taphouse and Grill (316 N Trade St.) in Matthews is serving up this blonde ale on tap for $7.50 a pint. So grab a pint and order up some food from the menu, which features English, Irish and American cuisine.

  1. Dude, are you stoned? What was your selection criteria? Citraquench’l from Heist is 4.37 (after 3,348 ratings) on Untappd. Hop Cakes is 4.08 to Hop Drop’s 4.02. Triple C Baby Maker available full-time in cans is 3.86 which would be 6th on your list. I mean there are literally dozens of Charlotte beers rated higher on Untappd than what you list here.

  2. Where’s Citraquench’l (4.37) Dirty Commie Heathen (4.03) MexiCali Stout (3.85) or any of Salud Cerveceria beers with 4+ ratings?? What a strange list. I love Wooden Robot but they are 1/3 of this list?

  3. Citraquench’l from Heist Brewing is the 33rd highest ranked ipa in the country with a 4.31 rating on untappd…. Hop Drop and Roll doesnt even make the list anymore of top ipa’s in the country. This list seems inaccurate to me.

  4. Citraquench’l from Heist Brewing is the 33rd highest ranked ipa in the country with a 4.31 rating on untappd…. Hop Drop and Roll doesn’t even make the list anymore of the top rated beers in the country. This list seems inaccurate to me.

  5. Give me a good amber ale like a Smithwicks or Highland Gaelic Ale in the Summer or a Tabu from Three Spirits. In the winter, a good Porter or Stout. You do not need to add any additional flavors like PB&J, let the grain, malt, and hops do the talking on their own.

    • Couldn’t agree more. These millennials prefer their beers ultra hoppy thinking it is more sophisticated, in reality it is less.

    • I’ll take all of them. Beer is good, added flavors or not. Good Morning Vietnam is my favorite local beer, while Red Oak is probably my favorite overall. Guinness is up there too

  6. This list is HIGHLY inaccurate. I searched only 2 beers on Untapped and both had better ratings than all the above mentioned. Heist Citraquenchl (4.37) and Cataclysm 3 (4.37). Im sure there a lot more beers that are ranked higher than what I believe to be this list of the writer’s personal favorites. You shouldn’t lie to the public Sean.

  7. Weird I just did an untapped search on the top rated beers for CLT and my list is completely different. There are a lot more higher rated beers than these from CLT
