Many of us get in a rut of visiting the same places within a 5-mile radius of our home. My mom is a new resident of South Carolina, so I am forced to step out of my comfort zone and explore some of the places close to her. She introduced me to a beautiful greenway along the Catawba River called Riverwalk: Piedmont Medical Center Trail.
The trail is in the 1,008-acre Riverwalk Carolinas community in Rock Hill, and it’s part of the Carolina Thread Trail. It starts at the kayak and canoe launch and follows the Catawba River for 3.35 miles in one direction.
Things to do
Walk, jog or run with your dog, family or friends. The path is paved, 10-feet wide and handicap accessible. It is not a loop so it’s almost 7 miles to the end and back.
Ride bikes on the greenway (stay below 10 mph) or mountain bike on one of the 8 miles of trails.
Dust off your bike for a whirl around the Rock Hill Outdoor Center which includes three bike facilities: Giordano Veladrome, Criterium Course or Novant Health BMX Supercross Track. Look for special events at each of the locations. All facilities are within walking distance of the greenway and are on the Riverwalk Carolinas property.
Plan your excursion to coincide with Riverwalk Carolinas Tawba Fest 2017 on September 30, 2017.
Look for future amenities and activities like a riverside amphitheater for live music and a place to rent bikes and kayaks on-site.
Sit at tables with views of the Catawba River, and enjoy Southern styled food for lunch and dinner, seven days a week, and Sunday brunch at The Pump House. It is adjacent to the parking lot in a repurposed pump house and was once used for a textile plant. Plan your adventure to end in time for the live music at their rooftop bar beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
