October isn’t just a month for pumpkin spice lattes, goblins and cooler weather – it’s time for your Charlotte Mecklenburg Library’s month-long Community Read. Unlike your favorite book club or summer reading recommendations, this is a reading celebration the ENTIRE family can get into with amazing opportunities to share, experience and connect!
You’re going to love this book
From toddlers to preteens, children and adults, there is a book for any age. Each book presents important themes around family issues, religion, immigration, heartache, friendships, understanding different cultures and backgrounds and takes place in a 24-hour time period. Without further adieu, here is your October reading list:
Adults: Today Will Be Different by Maria Semple
Teens: The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon
Preteens: 11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass
Children: The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt
Children: The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
Catch a FREE movie
Did you know there are lots of movies that take place in a 24-hour time span? It’s true. Watch a FREE showing of several of these films throughout the month of October as part of the Library’s regular film series. (Yes, “Groundhog Day” is on the list – we love that movie!)
Read the book, see the play
The Children’s Theatre of Charlotte will perform “The Snowy Day and Other Stories” this fall. What a fantastic opportunity to read this classic by Ezra Jack Keats to your little ones then watch them light up as the story comes to life on stage.
Meet the authors
In what type of magical book club can you meet the authors? Um, this one! You’ll have an opportunity to meet Maria Semple, author of “Today Will Be Different,” on October 2 AND rub elbows with Nicola Yoon, author of “The Sun Is Also a Star,” on October 6. You’ll also have a chance to ask the authors questions AND you might have the opportunity to get your book signed (so be sure to bring a copy). Reserve tickets by visiting the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte’s Website or call the Box Office at 704-973-2828.
Read and share with your neighbors
This amazing one-month book club goes beyond diving into a great read. There is an entire lineup of programs with themed storytimes, art projects, book discussions and even Escape Rooms! Take a look at the calendar and share your love of reading with your family, friends and community.
Before the craziness of the holidays settles in, take some time to read and share together in October. Movies, author meet and greets, performances and fun things to do all month long? Now that’s a book club we can really get into.
